Have You Visited Heyward House?

At Heyward House you are afforded the opportunity to step into the past while remaining mindful of the present. This historic Bluffton, S.C., landmark is a vital part of our developing community and keeps us connected to our roots. Make it among your first stops when visiting Bluffton. You will find brochures, maps, menus and all the information you desire about our special town.

The Heyward House and Museum, in the heart of the National Register Historic District, serves as the welcome center for the Town of Bluffton. It was built in 1841 as a summer home for a local plantation owner. It is one of only eight remaining antebellum homes in Old Town. It is named for the Heyward family, who owned the home from the early 1880s until 1998.

Pearce Scott Architects volunteered our people and expertise in renovating the second floor of this historic and culturally significant home. It is owned and operated by the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society and houses the Caldwell Archive, a collection of valuable historical resources that pertain to Bluffton and Beaufort County, considered one of the largest collections of archival resource materials in the state.

Located next to the bluffs overlooking the May River, Heyward is a simple timber-framed home. It is representative of the Carolina Farmhouse Style that was brought from the West Indies and was popular from the Colonial period up until the Civil War. As a result of its well-preserved condition, Heyward House is an official project of the Save America’s Treasures program.
